Tech Tip: Charging Cables

There goes another cable…

How many times have you had to replace your Apple 30 pin or Lightning cable? If you own an iPad, iPod or iPhone, it’s very likely you’ve had to replace it over time.

The cable-ends tend to crack/split open and expose the wires due to the regular daily stress of the cable being bent one direction or another to fit into the bottom of your device to charge.

I’ll admit, I’ve taken out the black electrical tape as a quick fix.  Taped up where the connector meets the plug, so the wires are positioned perfectly to allow my devices to charge up. It totally works but once a cable starts to come apart, there isn’t much you can do long term to prolong the inevitable, black electrical tape and all.

Why I never thought of this or had an “a-ha” moment to make & mass produce these little cases, I have no idea.   Let me introduce you to a way to save your cables…

They are essentially cases you wrap the cable end tips in, allowing the 30 pin or Lightning tips to still stick out but the connections pieces are firmly held in place, meaning they won’t bend anymore and also protecting the plug and cable from “splitting” up…

I’ve seen various ones online from eBay to Amazon to other eCommerce sites and they seem to average $4 – $12 for either a really solid case or a bundle of 4-5 cases.  Regardless of the price, all these cases will do the same thing.

Depending what type of phone or tablet case you have on your device, some of these models seem to be thicker – Meaning, you might have a hard time connecting the cable to your device without having to take the case off.

My Recommendation?  Google search 30 pin or Lightning cable protectors.   You will find your share of choices, sizes and colors.
